In Hawaii, seven species of bees all belonging to the Hylaeus family were added to the endangered species list at the beginning of October 2016.
Bees in NYC face similar challenges, like pollutants, global warming, habitat loss and destruction, invasive species, and Colony Collapse Disorder. Together, we can nip this in the bud and prevent NYC's bees from suffering the fate of Hawaii's bees.
But why? Why should you care? Why should you help?
Bees are amazing pollinators. Without them, we would need to rely on other insects, mammals, and birds to pollinate our plants. Few species are as adept at pollinating as bees species. Bees are responsible for more than 40% of food crop pollination. Without them, you can cut your meals in half, which might be great if you need to lose weight, but not so great once food scarcity causes rising prices, increased demand, and widespread hunger.
Ask yourself, "Don't bees deserve rights? Don't they deserve our help and protection?"
This page may be about 'why' you should care about bees, but why not wonder instead, "Why not?"
